First Day

In case you are wondering why the only sound you have been hearing here in this space is that of crickets…

It was all these two little monkey’s fault.

With a 2nd grader and preschooler seated at table, we began our 4th homeschool year in our home last Monday. Our days have been consumed with finding the balance  between new curriculum and having the last of the summer fun.

Now, before you go on thinking that I am a mean old mom for taking away their childhood summer days, just hear me out a bit….

See, our family resides in the Deep South, (or Northern Tropics as we like to joke). It is not uncommon for the temperatures to rise up in the 100’s before noon, with a heat index in the 110’s, making any outside activity dangerous if water is not involved. While we have taken full advantage of the pool and beach, enjoyed a week of Vacation Bible school, had many a play date with friends, and even had some fun with our Summer Bingo, my kids are stuck inside for most of the day.

Translation: My kids are bored and Momma’s gonna pull her hair out!

So, instead of sitting inside, bored and sulking, we are sitting inside in the throws of another homeschool year.

This will be the second year that we begin our homeschool year in the middle of summer. Last year paid off, and we were able to enjoy the cooler months with lots of outdoor exploring and play time, the majority of the month of December off (cause we all know how the holidays make things crazy!), and even a couple of weeks for vacation time with Dad.

We follow a 4 day school week which makes our school year run for 45 weeks instead of the usually 36. And we don’t mind it one bit! Having that one extra day off a week for field trips, appointments and errands, or for playing catch up works wonders for our family.

It has been just a little over a week, and I am happy to report that we have fallen right back into the swing of things. All is going smoothly and the many nights of planning are paying off.

When are you other homeschooling mommas beginning your new school year?

  1. I am right there with you ! We are in FL – and its too hot to be outside, and easy to get into trouble with no structure inside. We school during July and August and take a bit of a fall break come beautiful October/November weather !!
