Lately, our days have been full of sunshine, fun and laughter. We have had lots to celebrate these past few months, and now that summer is beginning to wind down as we begin another round of our family’s homeschool journey, I find myself reflecting on all of the memories that our family has made together.
For my daughter’s second grade year, we used Apologia’s Exploring Creation With Botany Text as our science curriculum spine. In conjunction with this text, each month we ventured out to our local 4-H Chapter’s Junior Master Garden and put in a few hours of good old fashion elbow grease.
Throughout the year, the Master Gardners from around the city volunteered their time to teach the students all about gardening–from seed to harvest–by helping them to plan, plant, cultivate, harvest and preserve the fruits of their labor.
Lessons in charity were also learned, as they children were able to grow a plot of potatoes from seed to donate to the local food bank. There was nothing sweeter than watching them dig up those potatoes!
My daughter’s favorite part of the year was after harvesting strawberries when they were taught how to make strawberry jam for canning.
(Secretly, this was Mom’s favorite lesson, too! I have always been too intimidated to try my hand at canning since the process seemed too difficult. I was pleasantly surprised!)
The children were able to take their own jars of sweet strawberry jam home to share with family and friends. My daughter’s study of botany could not have been more fun or rewarding!
At the end of May, we were sad to see the program come to an end for the year, but are looking forward to September to join in on the fun once again.
Lots of family birthdays fall during this month, and this year our extended family decided to celebrate in a BIG way! Four generations from across the states gathered for a week long birthday party to honor 80 years of the life of Great Grandma.
Lots of swimming, laughter, food and cake!
It was great fun and lots of memories were made. There were some family members who were not able to attend this year who were dearly missed, so it looks like we will just have to celebrate again next year for year 81!
We are fortunate to live in an area where nature’s beauty is abundant and beaches are just a short drive away. My husband, having grown up along the beach, whisks the family away there every chance he gets.
One Friday afternoon he decided that my son was finally old enough to enjoy some fishing and came home with two Zebco Spincast Fishing Combo with TacklePak, (one blue and one red of course), and shared that we would be taking a family fishing trip that weekend.
The children had a wonderful time out on the pier with their father, learning how to bait hooks and cast their rods. My daughter was even able to catch her fist fish ever all by herself! She was quite surprised at her accomplishment!
This time with their father was so enjoyed that I am sure that we have many more afternoons of fishing fun ahead of us before summer officially ends!
